Paarl WO
[PAH-rool]
An important demarcated South Africa wine district that is part of the Coastal region. It’s located around the town of Paarl, 35 to 40 miles northeast of Cape Town. Paarl (Dutch and Afrikaans for “pearl”) has long been one of the country’s largest growing regions, although its share is down slightly and is now between 16 and 17 percent of the nation’s total. Established in 1984, this small 3,200-acre viticultural area straddles the Pacheco Pass Highway (California Highway 152) in parts of Santa Clara and San Benito Counties. It’s just north of the city of Hollister, California, about 35 to 45 miles southeast of San Jose. Although the area is not yet very developed, several small wineries are located in the area.
Pacherenc du Vic Bilh AC
[pah-shuh-RAHNK doo veek BEEL]
In this part of Southwest France, the local dialect uses the word pacherenc for “posts in a row.” This refers to the modern method of planting vineyards in regular rows, using a post to support each vine. Vic Blih is the name for the local hills in this area, which are part the Pyrenees foothills, along the Adour River south of Armagnac. Padthaway
[PAD-thuh-way]
An Australian wine-producing region located in the Limestone Coast Zone in the southeastern corner of South Australia around the town of Padthaway near the New South Wales border. Early on, this region was called Keppoch, but after a struggle over the name it was changed to Padthaway. Although not far from Coonawarra, which is known for red wines, Padthaway’s reputation is for its white wines. Chardonnay is the superstar of this region; Riesling and Sémillon are also grown in quantity.
