Qualitätswein [kvah-lih-TAYTS-vine]

Term used for “quality wine” in Germany and Austria. Qualitätswein is the middle wine-quality level, above Tafelwein and Landwein. In Germany Qualitätswein is further divided into Qualitätswein bestimmter Anbaugebiet (QbA) and Qualitätswein mit Prädikat (QmP). The environment also creates the conditions necessary to attract the desirable mold Botrytis cinerea, which shrivels the grapes and concentrates the flavors … (view more)
quatrième cru [kah-tryehm KROO]

A French phrase meaning “fourth growth,” referring to the fourth-highest subcategory of the Médoc area’s crus classés (classed growths), which were established in the Classification of 1855 . Ten châteaux were ranked as quatrième cru in 1855, and this hasn’t changed.
