Cahors AC [kah-OR]
Located in Southwest France, this appellation produces red wines, mainly from Malbec (locally called Auxerrois) blended with small amounts of Merlot and Tannat. Cahors has a reputation for its “black wines,” which are made with grapes from the high limestone plateau vineyards and are so named because they’re very dark, tannic, and long-lived. Newer vineyards on the lower slopes produce much lighter-style red wines.
