Goulburn Valley
An Australian wine region located in the Central Victoria Zone of Victoria. It’s situated about 90 miles north of Melbourne around the town of Nagambie. Its wine history dates to 1850s when vines were first planted. In 1860, investors started the Tahbilk vineyard Proprietary (eventually called Chateau Tahhbilk), which survived the phylloxera infestation that partially destroyed area vineyards. Chateau Tahbilk, which has continuously produced wines throughout the decades, still has yielding vines that were planted in 1860. Mitchelton, the other major winery, did not arrive on the scene for over a hundred years. The climate of the Goulburn Valley is warm and lends itself to shiraz (Syrah) and Cabernet Sauvignon. Marsanne is the other variety with an esteemed reputation; Goulburn Valley is one of the few Australian regions well known for this variety. Other planted varieties are Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. There are over 1,700 acres planted in the region.
