Kerner [KEHR-nuhr]
developed in the late 1960s, this very successful German white hybrid is a combination of a red variety, Trollinger (Schiava), and a white grape, Riesling. It’s most heavily planted in Germany’s Rheinhessen and Pfalz regions, although it’s cultivated to some extent throughout the country. Kerner produces quality, Riesling-like wines with good acidity, floral characteristics, and aging ability.
