Meursault AC [mehr-SOH]
appellation that surrounds the village of Meursault, which is one of the largest of the Côte de Beaune. Although it has no grand cru vineyards, Meursault is quite famous for its white wines. Its reputation comes from its premier cru vineyards, the best known of which are Les Charmes, Les Genevrières, and Les Perrières. This last vineyard is often touted as a grand cru candidate, and its wines are favorably compared to those of le montrachet, considered by many as the very best white-wine grand cru vineyard. The premier cru vineyards can append their name on the label, as in Meursault-Perriers or Mersault-Charmes.
