Monteregio di Mass Marittima DOC [mohn-tay-RAY-zhee-oh dee mahss mah-REET-tee-mah]
Approved in 1994, this DOC is located near the coast in the western part of Italy’s Tuscany region, south of the Bolgheri and Val di Cornia docs and north of the city of Grosseto. Along with other areas along the Tuscan coast, it is attracting attention as a desirable growing area. Sangiovese is the main red variety; the primary whites are Vermentino, Trebbiano, and Malvasia. In addition to bianco, rosso, and Rosato wines, a varietal wine is made from Vermentino (requires a minimum 90 percent). Also white and red Vin Santo wines are made. The red, called Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice, requires 50 to 70 percent Sangiovese.
