Morellino di Scansano DOC [maw-reh-LEE-noh dee skahn-SAH-noh]
DOC zone located in the southern portion of Italy’s Tuscany region southeast of Grosseto. It encompasses the vineyards around the hilltop town of Scansano. The wine, which is developing a very good reputation among Sangiovese fans, is made from at least 85 percent Sangiovese grapes. This DOC is one of only a few that may use 100 percent of this grape. “Riserva” on the label means that the wine’s been aged for 2 years, one of which must be in wooden barrels.
