Musigny AC [myoo-zee-NYEE]

A distinguished grand cru vineyard located in the village of Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits district of France’s Burgundy region. The 261⁄2-acre site, which sits just above the famous Clos de Vougeot grand cru vineyard, is planted entirely with Pinot Noir grapes (except for a small 3⁄4-acre plot that grows Chardonnay). Known for their magnificent perfumed fragrance, Musigny red wines are lighter and have more elegance and finesse than many of the other grands crus (such as Chambertin or Bonnes Mares). They generally mature more quickly and can be drunk relatively young. Even though the small plot of Chardonnay produces very good white wines, their quantity is limited, which makes them very expensive. They’re generally not deemed as good as white wines from other top grands crus, nor are they as highly regarded as the Musigny red wines.
