Rheinterrasse [RIN-tehr-ah-suh]

This German term, which means “Rhine terrace,” refers to a strip of vineyards situated along Rhine River from the village of Bodenheim south to the village of Mettenheim. These vineyards are part of the Rheinhessen region and are noted for producing superb wines, particularly those made from Riesling, but also Sylvaner. The very best of the Rheinterrasse vineyards are around the villages of Nackenheim, Nierstein, and Oppenheim.
