Scharzhofberg [SHAHRTS-hoff-berk]

One of Germany’s premier vineyards, which is located near the village of Wiltingen along the Saar River in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region. Riesling wines from this vineyard are often rated in the top echelon of all German wines. The Scharzhofberg vineyard consists of approximately 67 acres planted almost entirely with Riesling vines. There are a half-dozen growers, but the largest and best parcel is owned by the Müller family. Scharzhofberg is classified as an Ortsteil, which means its wines don’t use Wiltingen in the name—they’re simply labeled “Scharzhofberg.” Wines from the Grosslage that covers this area are labeled “Wiltinger Scharzberg,” which can cause some confusion.
