Sunbury
An Australian wine region located in the Port Phillip Zone of Victoria. It’s situated about 20 to 25 miles northwest of Melbourne around the town of Sunbury. This region is just south of the Macedon Ranges region and was once grouped with that region. It is much flatter than the Macedon Ranges but is similarly affected by strong winds and is therefore a cool growing region (but not as cool as the Macedon Ranges). This allows shiraz (Syrah) to DO very well as evidenced by the wines from Craiglee. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc also like the cool weather, although there’s not much of the latter two varieties planted. Although Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are planted here, to be successful they require a good vineyard location and warmer years. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon are also grown in this area. There are just over 200 acres of vineyards in the Sunbury region.
