winegrower; winegrowing
Narrowly defined, a winegrower is a person who cultivates grapes and makes wine from them. But this doesn’t really convey the full meaning. The implication is that this person is not simply a grower interested in maximizing yield and profits. A winegrower is someone who understands that the quality of the grapes produced has a huge impact on the quality of the finished wine—wine is “made” in the vineyard. He or she is familiar with the latest viticultural practices and uses them. winegrowing employs procedures to keep yields down; canopy management techniques to create the optimal grape-growing environment for maximum flavor, color, and ripeness of the grapes; limited use of chemicals; and meticulous harvesting practices to pick all fruit at optimal ripeness levels.
