Donald Breed

Donald was born on Dec. 12, 1934 in Freeport, IL.  His father published the daily newspaper, and Donald grew up with the belief that he would take over the family business.  In 1956 he graduated from Harvard, and worked at the paper for a year before joining the Naval Reserve.  He served close to four years, including two years in Japan on a coastal minesweeper.  After returning to the family business he left for the Providence Journal in 1966, where he remained for 30 years.  During that time he also had a Professional Journalism Fellowship (now called Knight Fellowship) at Stanford University.

Donald started the wine column at the Providence Journal in the mid 70's.  He had the opportunity to travel to Italy, France, Germany and Portugal to go to several tastings and tramp through wine cellars.

After leaving the Providence Journal he continued to write their wine column for about a year, and today writes for the Mass. Beverage, Quarterly Review of Wines, and the New England Wine Gazette.  He also wrote for Kitchen & Cook while it was still in circulation.
