Winemaker’s Tasting Notes
Our Riesling is almost bone dry. This helps balance the wine’s abundant fruit with a nice amount of stone fruit and mineral character. The wine is wonderful with seafood or your favorite spicy noodle bowl but also can be enjoyed as a prelude to your next culinary opus.
Vintage Notes
In East of Eden, John Steinbeck placed his main characters on the hills east of King City and on those same hills is where we planted our Sweetwater vineyard. The maritime climate is cool and in some years unabashedly called cold but at the same time it is relatively dry and groundwater is scarce; this wasn’t propitious for Steinbeck’s fictional ranchers and farmers but it is prized conditions for growing Riesling grapes. The lack of water controls vine vigor, strengthens the berries and concentrates flavors - all this being good for producing great wine or plotting a tempestuous tale for a great novel.
Fermentation Notes
Riesling fermentations can take a very long time. This wine’s slow and cold fermentation enhanced the production and retention of complex fruit flavors and mineral qualities. The wine remains on lees for three months to gain mid palate richness and help temper the natural acidity.
