    Winemaker’s Tasting Notes

My goal with Ludwig is to find small vineyard blocks that make unique and extraordinary wine. All the Ludwig Rieslings are single vineyard selections because Riesling loses so much character when it's blended and there are already plenty of blunted Rieslings on the market. Currently I have two Rieslings: Sweetwater vineyard and Lorelei's vineyard. Next year I will add a Santa Lucia Highlands appellation Riesling from Hillside vineyard. Each Riesling has a different color label. As a winemaker with 26 years of professional experience, I'm often in the right place to discover a special vineyard or more often a corner of a vineyard that produces exceptionally fine wine. My approach is from an insider's point of view, going with the flow, finding unique and often old vineyards that were forgotten as California wineries rushed to become famous by bottling an imitative blend of a mainstream varietal. When I find an exceptional and underutilized vineyard, I buy the grapes and make the wine. What's the point of being an independent garage winery if you don't act like one? As long as there's money in my checking account, I'll be on the lookout for outstanding grapes. All the Rieslings and the soon to be released Ludwig Gewurztraminer have the same price and considering they are all small lot, vineyard designated wines, they should be popular and considered a good value by those who like (off)dry wines made from Northern European varietals. (By the way a good portion of my production is sold to the Swiss, which should tell you something about the authenticity of these wines.) My marketing budget is very small so please tell a friend.
